Bundled parcel delivery Hub Utrecht Oost ensures more sustainable and efficient city logistics

Lyreco is one of the frontrunners when it comes to sustainable logistics by consciously choosing, as a supplier, to ship via the Utrecht East Hub. On behalf of Lyreco, Ingrid van Kats says: "Sustainable development is also in Lyreco's DNA and this is reflected in every aspect of our services, including logistics. In logistics, we focus mainly on reducing waste and packaging and reducing the environmental impact of our transport. Orders are delivered CO2 neutrally and more and more electric delivery vans are being used. And also these kinds of partnerships with Hubs in major cities are projects that we as Lyreco embrace so that together we can significantly reduce the CO2 footprint."

Area-based freight hub

Hub Utrecht Oost is an independent area-based freight hub for the Utrecht east side, primarily focused on Rijnsweerd and Utrecht Science Park. The hub has a non-profit purpose and is managed by an independent foundation. Together with Utrecht University and HU University of Applied Sciences, the province is the initiator of Hub Utrecht Oost. The hub was officially opened in May 2023 and is located on Winthontlaan in Westraven.

Reduced emissions

"To achieve efficient sustainable logistics as Hub Utrecht Oost, cooperation with organisations based in the area, as well as their suppliers, is very important. Together, we realise the social impact: less and cleaner vehicle movements, thus less emissions and CO2. That is why I am very happy that, in this composition, we are celebrating Lyreco's first delivery to the province of Utrecht today. The fact that the 'Omgevingsdienst regio Utrecht', another organisation in the provincial government, is also immediately linked to the hub's services is exactly what we are aiming for," says Peter Steijn, chairman of the Hub Utrecht Oost Foundation.

Bundling deliveries

Has Bakker, deputy commissioner with portfolio Climate and Circular Society: "Instead of deliveries throughout the day, deliveries arrive bundled daily or several times a week. Not only does this save trips and packaging material from suppliers, this also relieves the province's Hub Utrecht Oost service of goods receiving. It is less ad hoc. Other companies and institutions at Rijnsweerd or the USP can also use these hubs. This ensures more efficient and sustainable deliveries."

Last kilometer

André van Schie, member of the Provincial Executive for Mobility: "The Hub Utrecht Oost is a striking example of 'smart delivery'. It fits our provincial ambition to make precisely the so-called 'last kilometer' of urban logistics more efficient and sustainable."
