King Willem-Alexander visited the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute
His Majesty King Willem-Alexander visited the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute in Utrecht on Tuesday morning, 7 November. The institute studies biodiversity across the spectrum of the fungal kingdom and stores 130,000 living fungi, yeasts and bacteria - the largest collection in the world.
The King spoke with young researchers there about their research projects, followed by a tour through the institute. He was explained how to recognise fungal diseases, the storage methods of fungi (in liquid nitrogen or freeze-dried or as before in test tubes) and the influence of fungi on food safety, agriculture and biodiversity. The king also spoke to researchers about the applications of the research and collection to current questions in health, agriculture and industry.
