Opening new exhibition On Earth Sonneborgh Museum

From Thursday, April 24 Sonnenborgh will present the new immersive exhibition On Earth. An experience that touches, amazes and changes your view of the world. Get carried away on a philosophical voyage of discovery through stories, art and science about climate and our relationship with the earth.

In the historic bastion where Buys Ballot founded KNMI and where scientists studied the sun for years, Sonnenborgh now turns its gaze to our own planet. On Earth is no ordinary exhibition, but an experience that immerses you in image, sound and feeling. The visitor follows elementary school teacher Elin, who is looking for a new story to help her students approach the climate crisis differently. The story takes you into her study and workshop, where she builds that story in the form of simulations that engage all your senses. In this way, On Earth explores the way we use stories to understand Earth.

'On Earth makes you look differently at the world around you. It moves, encourages. It is an experience that stays with you - long after you have left Sonnenborgh.'
- Giovanni Stijnen, director Sonnenborgh

Collaboration with artists and scientists

The exhibition was developed by program makers Tanja Koning and Rinke Vreeke, and the Sonnenborgh team. Several creators were involved in the process, including writer Marjolijn van Heemstra, illustrator Joost Stokhof and the designers De Reuringdienst, Studio Noralie and Pieter Aartsen. The exhibition also contributes to important research; together with KNMI, Utrecht University and the Utrecht Environmental Center, heat stress in the city is being mapped. With the installation of a professional KNMI weather station at Sonnenborgh (planned for 2025), the KNMI will return to Sonnenborgh after an absence of more than 100 years. Researchers from Utrecht University are also working with Sonnenborgh on a research project focused on the role of stories and emotions in climate communication.
