New indoor garden WKZ: child-friendly and wheelchair-friendly

Wilhelmina Children's Hospital has long had a big wish: a new, wheelchair-friendly indoor garden. A garden where all children are challenged to move. Because, fun and movement are very important for children's therapy and treatment. Thanks to the donors and sponsors of Friends of UMC Utrecht & Wilhelmina Children's Hospital, this wish has become a reality. After a renovation of over two years, the beautiful indoor garden was festively opened yesterday by Kees-Jan van der Klooster, former Dutch paralympic athlete, and Sabir of the Children's Council of the WKZ.

The old, largely tiled and non-wheelchair-friendly indoor garden of the WKZ has now been successfully transformed into an inviting, child- and wheelchair-friendly play area. With a unique custom-made obstacle course specially designed for children in wheelchairs. Now all children can enjoy this "Parcours on Wheels," where they can play with scooters, bicycles and go-karts or jump on a wheelchair-friendly trampoline. There is also a new, large play area in the form of a play hump. Under the play hump is a tunnel that is also wheelchair accessible.

Frédérique van Berkestijn, medical department head of pediatrics: "I stand here as a proud person. This beautiful indoor garden offers sick children and their siblings a place to play outside, have fun and follow therapies. It is a nice, green place where they can escape from the hustle and bustle of the hospital for a while."

Exercise is healthy!

Thanks to donors, legacies and sponsorships, Friends of UMC Utrecht & Wilhelmina Children's Hospital was able to realize the new indoor garden for sick children and their siblings. Here they can not only have fun and exercise, but also undergo important therapies for muscular diseases and participate in the WKZ Sportive program. The garden gives sick children a fresh, green place to escape the hustle and bustle of the hospital!
