Project HU: With your banana peel you generate green energy!
A machine that generates green energy from organic waste: that sounds like music to the ears of, in particular, the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering programmes and, by extension, the Institute for Life Sciences & Chemistry at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. A dream that may soon hopefully become reality. In the spring of 2025, a so-called Bio-digester is expected to be installed in the building at Heidelberglaan 7. The Bio-digester will convert pure separated organic waste into green energy. The goal? Running the building on the energy generated by the Bio-digester!
For the bio-digester to run optimally without unexpected twists and turns, it is important that the gfe waste is 100% pure. This means that there should be no to little residue of other waste in it. To achieve this, it is necessary to motivate students, staff and visitors to Heidelberglaan 7 to separate their waste cleanly.
Four students working for the communication consultancy Scompany from the communication course are taking up the challenge to ensure, through communication, that students and staff at Heidelberg Avenue 7 will separate their gfe waste more cleanly.
The Bio-digester project offers a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary cooperation between different fields of study. For example, the Chemistry students are working on optimising the Bio-digester and the Communication students on positioning the Bio-digester. The students bring their expertise together to contribute to making Utrecht Science Park more sustainable through technological innovation and behavioural change. This project fits perfectly with the Utrecht Science Park's goals of creating a sustainable and future-proof campus.
This is where the Bio-digester will be located.
For the research, the students will be spending a lot of time at Heidelberglaan 7. Want more information about the project? Feel free to give them a call. Together, we are taking a step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future for everyone!
